1. Purpose. To publish list of ships and stations designated to fire gun salutes. Major changes
to this revision include the addition of Naval Ordnance Test Unit, Cape Canaveral, FL to the
shore listing.
2. Cancellation. OPNAVINST 5060.5G.
3. Background. Reference (a), article 1212, defines saluting ships and stations as those so
designated by the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) or his or her duly authorized representative.
The SECNAV designates those stations authorized to return national gun salutes fired by foreign
warships. The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) is the duly authorized representative of the
SECNAV to designate all other saluting ships and stations. Enclosure (1) lists ship-types
designated as saluting ships. Enclosure (2) lists shore activities designated as saluting stations.
4. Applicability. This instruction applies to all ships and shore stations of the Navy authorized
to fire gun salutes.
5. Action
a. Shore activities listed in enclosure (2) are required to have a 40 millimeter saluting
battery and qualified team to maintain and operate the saluting battery. See reference (b) for
qualification criteria.
b. Some ship-types that possess a saluting capability may be directed, whether by combatant
commanders or fleet commanders, to fire or return gun salutes when required in the national
interest.
