1. Purpose
a. To establish the Department of the Navy (DON) Space
Policy and assign DON space-related roles and responsibilities
for implementing guidance, per references (a), (b), (c), and
(d).
b. This instruction is substantially revised to update the
DON Space Policy and align senior leader summits, boards, and
working groups with current guidance.
2. Cancellation.

3. Applicability. This instruction applies to the Offices of
the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), the Chief of Naval
Operations (CNO), the Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC), as
well as all U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps installations,
commands, activities, field offices, and all other
organizational entities within the DON.
4. Policy
a. As an expeditionary, global, and forward postured force,
the DON is heavily reliant on space-based capabilities to operate
across the maritime domain and ashore. Access to reliable space-
based communications, weather, indications and warning, and
positioning, navigation, and timing is paramount to achieve naval
objectives of battlespace awareness, assured command and control,
maneuver, and integrated fires.
b. The DON is an active component of the Joint Force for
both space operations and acquisition. The expertise gained in
