SUBJECT: Department of the Air Force Guidance Memorandum (DAFGM) to
DODI3216.02_DAFI40-402, Protection of Human Subjects and Adherence to Ethical
Standards in Department of the Air Force Supported Research
By Order of the Secretary of the Air Force, this DAFGM redesignates DODI3216.02_
AFI40-402 as DODI3216.02_DAFI40-402 and immediately implements changes to this
publication. This DAFGM reissues the attachment to DODI3216.02_AFI40-402_AFGM2021-
01 with changes to the applicability line. Compliance with this DAFGM is mandatory. To the
extent its directions are inconsistent with other Department of the Air Force publications, the
information herein prevails, in accordance with Department of the Air Force Instruction (DAFI)
90-160, Publications and Forms Management, and Department of the Air Force Manual
(DAFMAN) 90-161, Publishing Processes and Procedures.
The intent of the changes described in this DAFGM is to standardize the Department of
the Air Force's review requirements with the other Military Departments and within the
Department of Defense; replace existing requirements with alternative approaches that are less
burdensome for investigators and research oversight officials; and clarify unclear statements.
This will assist in decreasing the amount of time needed to get research studies approved.
This DAFGM becomes void after one year has elapsed from the date of this DAFGM, or
upon incorporation by interim change to, or rewrite of DODI3216.02_DAFI40-402, whichever
is earlier.
