This grenade is one of those fringe dwellers in that it didn’t get into general service being issued only
in Burma for extended trials. It was fitted with the ubiquitous No. 247 fuze. The filling was Baratol or
Amatol in the Mk II version and RDX/TNT in the Mk III. The body was made from cast iron. The
difference between the Mk II and the Mk III was that the Mk III did not have a filling hole.
There was a No 71 grenade developed but never put into service as it was considered to be too heavy
for throwing. It was of the same general design as the No 70 but it weighed almost a kilogram.
