This grenade was known as the “Gammon grenade” and it was introduced in May 1943 being kept in
service until declared obsolete in 1945.
It was filled with Plastic explosive or any other explosive that was available.
It was fuzed with the ubiquitous No. 247 Allways but in this particular case the normal 11.5 inch
safety tape was replaced with 4.5 inch tape. This was designed to give a shorter arming time for close
in work against tanks. It didn’t take long before this arrangement was found to be somewhat
hazardous. The change was indicated by the top of the fuze being painted red.
