1. Purpose. To update and clarify policies concerning the
Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), per references (a) through (f).
Detailed information pertaining to NPS can be found in
enclosures (1) through (7).
2. Cancellation. SECNAVINST 1524.2C.
3. Background. Reference (a) authorizes the operation of NPS
under the purview of the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV). To
perform effectively in peace and in war, Navy and Marine Corps
officers must understand the technologies inherent to the
capabilities of their weapons systems and ships, the way in
which such capabilities are synergistically integrated into
naval operations, the manner in which operations contribute to
the fulfillment of a coherent national strategy, and the way in
which resources may be used most efficiently to meet the
requirements of such a national strategy. The professional
