Subj: RETIREMENT OF THE ASSISTANT JUDGE ADVOCATE GENERAL OF
THE NAVY

1. Purpose. To prescribe Department of the Navy (DON) policy
for the positions of the Assistant Judge Advocate General (AJAG)
of the Navy.
2. Cancellation. SECNAVINST 1800.3.
3. Applicability. This instruction applies to the Office of
the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), the Chief of Naval
Operations, the Commandant of the Marine Corps and all U.S.
Navy, U.S. Marine Corps installations, commands, activities,
field offices, and all other organizational entities within the
DON.
4. Policy
a. Reference (a) provides discretionary authority for AJAGs
of the Navy serving in lower grades to be retired in the grades
of rear admiral (lower half) or brigadier general. The DON has
chosen to promote AJAGs upon retirement.
b. DON AJAGs are competitively selected by flag and general
officer selection boards employing statutory procedures
applicable to promotion selection boards to the maximum extent
practicable. The AJAG positions are as follows:
(1) AJAG (Civil Law);
(2) AJAG (Operations and Management);
